Non-lethal management:

Guardian animals to

protect livestock.

An ancient practice to protect livestock

Guardian animals have been used by farmers to protect livestock for thousands of years. The use of guardian animals has been found to successfully reduce or eliminate livestock predation by apex predators both in Australia and internationally. When guardian animals are present in an area the chance of dingoes re-entering is low, which is unlike other means of control such as trapping, shooting and poisoning.

A range of animals are utilised as guardians for livestock, including dogs and donkeys. It is important to note that whilst alpacas are utilised as guardians against fox predation, they are unsuitable to protect sheep from dingoes, as alpacas are at the same risk of predation.
